English Vocabulary: Friends

Today we’re going to stay with the friends theme, discussing some common vocabulary, phrasal verbs, and idioms that we use regarding friends and our relationships.

Best friend- This is the person that you would trust with your deepest secret. Maybe it’s not the person that you’ve known the longest, but it’s the person whom you feel the closest to. If they speak English, it’d be nice for you to tell them that they are your best friend!

Close friend- These are friends with whom you have a lot in common with, and you get along really well.

An acquaintance – Somebody that you have met a few times, sometimes through another friend, that you are familiar with, but you wouldn’t consider a friend.

Friend of a friend- This is a friend that you met through another friend!

Family friend- A friend that you have met through your family, or a family member.

Get along – Phrasal verb alert! To get along well with somebody, means that you really enjoy spending time together and that you always enjoy each other’s company. Of course, this can also be used for “Not getting along with somebody”, which means the opposite.

Here are some informal ways to say “Friend” – Buddy (Bud), dude, mate (in the UK and Australia), pal, bro. These words are used in conversations all the time!

Who are your friends? – American English Culture Lesson

“Tell me who your friends are, and I’ll tell you who you are.”

Have you ever heard this quote before? It’s a very popular saying in American culture – do you agree or disagree? Regardless of whether or not you agree with this statement, we can certainly agree on the fact that we have the ability to choose our friends. That being said, what kind of qualities do you look for in a friend? My friends are caring, funny, easy-going, spontaneous, musical, and interesting. These are also some of my favorite adjectives!

Sometimes our friends don’t specifically have the personality traits we hope for, but that’s what friends are for! Loving and supporting each other regardless of our differences. For example, I’m sure that some of us have friends with some negative personality traits: careless, lazy, rude, or inconsiderate; hopefully not too many of these! Our differences are what make friendships and groups of friends unique. Our friends are our support system, and it’s important to show your appreciation for them whenever you get the chance to.

When studying Conversational English, it’s very important to have friends who are willing to help you out. Whether they are English speakers, or foreign individuals with some knowledge of English, they are a great resource for practicing English Conversation on a regular basis. Remember this important tool (friends)  that you will hopefully always have around you to help you increase your knowledge. English Pronunciation Lesson: “Uh” vs. “Ooh”

Hey everybody! Today’s blog post is about English pronunciation, specifically related to sounds made with the letter “O.” As you can probably imagine, it is quite difficult to explain an English pronunciation lesson with a blog post, but don’t worry, there will be a video coming soon!

The two sounds that will be discussed today are “Uhh” and “Ooh.” The first sound, “Uh” comes from the bottom of our throats, and is a very short sound. This sound is used in the word “Good.”

The next sound, “Ooh” comes from inside of our mouths, and we can see our lips form an “O” if we look in the mirror while pronouncing these words.

Here are some words that use the sound “Uh” :

Good          Book         Wood         Would       Should       Could         Wool          Hood

Here are some words that use the sound “Ooh”:

Goul           Boot          Womb       Toot           Shoot          Coupe        Flute           Hoop

PRACTICE EVERY DAY: 

  1. Read all of the words on the first line
  2. Read all of the words on the second line
  3. Read one word from the first line, then one word from the second. (example. “Good, Goul”

This exercise will help you differentiate the sound of “Uh” and “Ooh.” If you practice this exercise two times every day, you will see a great improvement in your pronunciation of words with the vowel “O.”

When your learn English, so many students (and teachers) become very focused, sometimes even obsessed with Grammar rules.  English grammar is very important when speaking and learning a language, however we cannot underestimate the importance of Pronunciation. Good pronunciation will impress native speakers, even if your grammar isn’t great. One of the greatest challenges when working on pronunciation in English, is the pronunciation of vowels. In the Express-English online English course, we spend a lot of time working on pronunciation. Two of the main sounds associated with this letter, don’t sound anything like the way that the letter “O” is actually pronounced.

English Conversation and Vocabulary: Local New York City Heroes

The article features some great storytelling, use of the past tense, and some interesting vocabulary. Read the article and then answer the following questions:

  1. What would you do if you were in Victor’s shoes?
  2. How would you have reacted if you were a person on the platform?
  3. How do you think the old man felt after Victor saved his life?
